Level 5 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment
This distance learning qualification is aligned with skills and behaviors outlined in BS 8674: 2025 – Built Environment Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors.
Throughout the qualification candidates will build on their existing competencies in intermediate and foundational risk assessment, prepare to carry out fire risk assessments in high-risk buildings, and develop good habits for ongoing learning and best practice, helping them stay up to date and grow as a fire risk assessor.
Who should complete this course?
This qualification is designed for individuals who are currently working as a fire risk assessor, or those H&S practitioners aspiring to work as a fire risk assessor and may be undertaking low or medium risk FRA currently, and need to graduate to assessing higher risk buildings and environments.
You should consider this Level 5 if you:
✓ Hold the ProQual Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment or equivalent Level 4 Qualification
or
✓ Have a minimum of five years demonstrable experience in the field of fire risk assessment
You must also be employed in a role, or enrolled on a training course, that enables you to carry out fire risk assessments either in real environments or through realistic simulations for low, moderate, and high risk buildings.
If you are a buildings/facility manager who has to implement fire risk controls from a risk assessment undertaken by another person, the Level 5 Award in Fire Risk Assessment may be a more suitable course for you.

✓ Written Q&As to demonstrate your understanding of theory
✓ An Observation of you carrying out an agreed task at your workplace
✓ A Witness Testimony from your manager/supervisor
What is a high-risk building?
The Institute of Fire Safety Managers defines high-risk buidings as:
✓ Elevated complexity and potential hazards
✓ Exceeding 500 occupants
✓ Exended internal travel distances to final exits, surpassing 60 meters, single stairs, or intricate arrangements along expected travel routes
✓Expansive maximum fire spread areas exceeding 100m2
Examples of high-risk buildings include high rise flats, complex factory-commercial units, care homes, hotels and hospitals.

You can start at any time. Once your registration has been processed, you’ll receive your work pack including your SHE Knows Level 5 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment workbook.
Your assessor will then book an induction with you during which they will explain evidence gathering and how to understand our workbook and filing systems.
They will also go through your competence analysis to help both you and your assessor understand your experience, strengths, and areas where you may need to develop further. This induction gives your assessor the opportunity to get to know you and plan how best to support you throughout the qualification, so it’s worth setting aside time for this session!
