Level 5 Award in Fire Risk Assessment

This distance learning qualification is aligned with skills and behaviors outlined in BS 8674: 2025 – Built Environment Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors. Completion of this course will give candidates the knowledge to apply risk assessments and risk control measures to high-risk buildings.

Who should complete this course?

This qualification is designed for those who implement fire risk controls in high-risk buildings from fire risk assessments carried out by others, but who are not responsible for creating the FRA themselves, for example buildings or facilities managers.

You should consider this Level 5 if you:
✓ Hold the ProQual Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment or equivalent Level 4 Qualification
or
✓ Have a minimum of five years demonstrable experience in the field of fire risk assessment

You must also be employed in a role, or enrolled on a training course, that enables you to review risk assessment either in real environments or through realistic simulations for low, moderate, and high risk buildings.

If you are a practising fire risk assessor already handling low to medium risk FRAs and looking to progress to higher-risk buildings, the Level 5 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment may be a more suitable course for you.

What does this course involve?

This course is made up of one unit:
✓ Managing the Risk of Fire in High-Risk Buildings

Those who complete this unit may then opt to take any of the following additional units (additional costs apply):
✓ Undertaking a Fire Risk Assessment for High-Risk Buildings
✓ Advanced Fire Risk Assessment
✓ Personal Development as an Advanced Fire Risk Assessor
Completion of all 4 units will award you the Level 5 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment

You will demonstrate your competence through a range of assessment methods, including:
✓ Practical evidence from tasks carried out at your workplace
✓ Written Q&As to demonstrate your understanding of theory
✓ A Witness Testimony from your manager/supervisor

What is a high-risk building?

The Institute of Fire Safety Managers defines high-risk buidings as:
✓ Elevated complexity and potential hazards
✓  Exceeding 500 occupants
✓ Exended internal travel distances to final exits, surpassing 60 meters, single stairs, or intricate arrangements along expected travel routes
✓Expansive maximum fire spread areas exceeding 100m2

Examples of high-risk buildings include high rise flats, complex factory-commercial units, care homes, hotels and hospitals.

Time scales for completion can vary from candidate to candidate, based on your job role, experience, and how much time you have to dedicate to the course, however ProQual estimates that the average time spent on this qualification is 100 hours.

You can start at any time. Once your registration has been processed, you’ll receive your work pack including your SHE Knows Level 5 Award in Fire Risk Assessment workbook.

Your assessor will then book an induction with you during which they will explain evidence gathering and how to understand our workbook and filing systems.

They will also go through your competence analysis to understand your experience and strengths, and identify any areas where you may need to develop further. This induction gives your assessor the opportunity to get to know you and plan how best to support you throughout the qualification, so it’s worth setting aside time for this session!
